Smarter Approaches
to Efficiency

As LNG applications evolve, facilities must adapt infrastructure to cope, whether this is achieved by upgrading jetties to support bigger vessel types, using floating units as semi-permanent storage structures or using ship-to-ship transfers more regularly to meet demand.

All of these situations have implications on efficiency if infrastructure is being used in a way that is no longer fit for purpose. 

Solutions must be designed to optimize the business equation of LNG loading and unloading operations. That means engineering infrastructure with all major KPIs in mind, from reduced time to operation, to capex optimization and competitive operational lifecycle costs. From new market entrants to the traditional players, all LNG project owners should have this common goal and focus and work to a standardized approach to ensure flexibility and compatibility.

Efficiency in processing the huge amounts of documentation required for new projects is key. A faster and easier permitting journey helps to meet the project deadlines immensely. The situation varies between countries but often, gaining the permit and project approvals from diverse administrative bodies and authorities is not an easy task. It consumes resource and timelines and extended project deadlines are the result: hampering efficiency and delaying ROI.

Using standardized equipment for LNG transfer operations that already meets regulatory guidelines for the project location ensures that all permitting requirements are fulfilled quickly and efficiently, while also deploying a leaner infrastructure.

That means sound engineering knowledge in mechanical and structural engineering, electrical and instrumentation engineering, and software and communication engineering.  All of these requirements must also be considered within the broader picture of up-to-date knowledge of all standards – electrical, class and regional – and the interpretation of these within the individual operating conditions.

Tailored support is essential to meet the needs of each unique facility and maximize uptime through predictive maintenance. Service, at both a local and a global level, minimizes total lifecycle costs.

Maintenance packages need to be built specifically for the application. Mooring configurations provide a good illustration: with the introduction of FSRU technologies and the long term nature of their mooring alongside the jetty, there is a need for lower maintenance quick release hooks (QRHs). If maintenance free options are not specified, safety and efficiency are compromised. 

Smart technologies play an evolving and increasingly critical role in the efficiency of LNG projects. Data sharing and communication between stakeholders is paramount not only to the safety of operations, but to the long term decision making involved in the evolution of the facility. Through standardized, compatible data, all parties can glean useful insights into the efficiency of vessel turnaround and identify areas for improvement.

For safe and efficient pilotage and port operation, information from various instruments, sources and systems are essential. By giving pilots as well as port personnel real-time access to relevant information and automatic interaction they can act instantly and make their decisions based on a complete understanding of the situation. 

The services available with SafePilot Port Server are extensive, from simple AIS and meteorological data to comprehensive integration of administrative systems such as automatic billing.

Cryoline Floating Hose

Trelleborg is constantly working to evolve its solutions for the LNG industry, marking a major milestone with the launch of a first-of-its-kind Cryoline floating LNG hose-in-hose transfer system. This increases safety and lowers operator costs, improving access to LNG fuel.
 
The cryogenic floating hose system enables rethinking of the conventional wisdom in LNG ship-to-shore transfer for regasification, liquefaction and terminal storage, as well as for gas power generation projects. It also offers a more viable and innovative alternative to existing ship-to-ship transfer systems, ensuring higher safety and operability standards through optional increased distances between vessels. And in utilizing aerial hoses with large inner diameters ranging from 16 to 20 inches, operators have a greater choice of configuration, more flexibility and a less strenuous replacement to conventional ship-to-ship systems.

SmartPort is already at a port in Oman, linking together port approach, berthing and fender array systems to provide the port operator with a complete, real-time overview of operations. All relevant process phases and products are now integrated, and the system links with other third party interfaces from the port – and the vessels – to deliver consistent, real-time communications between all stakeholders.
